This is the story of Pride and Prejudice as seen through the eyes of Reggie, Mr. Darcy's dog. Reggie has a keen perception of things going on around him and the story begins with Darcy as a young boy of 15, picking Reggie out from a litter. We see the two of them become close companions as Darcy grows up and enters the story of Pride and Prejudice that Jane Austen penned. But the story also takes you to those silent months and behind the scenes where Reggie has much on which to reflect, comment, and intervene.

I hesitated to buy this book for a long time due to the premise of a dog's POV but since I have loved this author's other books, finally decided to purchase and read this.One MUST remember going in that this is a story told from Darcy's pet dog's point of view. There is no POV from Elizabeth or Darcy and we only gets scenes when that pet, Reggie, is present. So we don't hear the dialogue between ODC as they dance at Netherfield, etc. And we feel all the frustration Reggie feels in his limited ability to communicate his opinions or desires to Darcy. But we do see that not only is Reggie a good judge of character in that he takes an immediate liking to Elizabeth Bennet but also reflects on how Darcy acts with the best of judgments in choosing to buy Reggie from a group of puppies of inferior breeding but then uses "breeding" as a reason not to propose to Elizabeth.
Reggie's sense of smell lead his moves and urging of Darcy to take certain paths and to also warn Darcy of certain undesirable person's closeness. There is a side story for Reggie when Darcy decides to buy Bingley's abandoned female dog when Netherfield is shut up upon the infamous "return to town" after the ball. There are moments of poignancy as we read of Reggie's aging and then treatment at the hands of a certain nefarious character.
I did miss the moments of chemistry between ODC usually read in stories in the JAFF genre. There is no angst as this story line follows canon.

This Pride and Prejudice variation is delightful. Told from the perspective of Mr. Darcy's dog, we get an intimate behind-the-scenes look at how Darcy became the man he is and how his love grows for Elizabeth over time. The author does a remarkable job keeping the dog's perspective without making it seem contrived or awkward. I have read all of this authors other books and she always delivers interesting stories with characters you'd like to meet yourself. This book is no exception.
Young Master Darcy has just lost his Mother, and his Father takes him to pick out a dog from a well-known breeder. Mr D wants his son to take the best from the top-tier litter, but Fitzwilliam can't get another dog off his mind, a friendly boy from the 2nd tier litter, with big expressive eyes. This little dog becomes the sole friend, playmate, protector, bedmate and confidant of a young boy who has been given to understand the huge responsibilities he is to inherit. As they grow up together they retain their very special bond. Reggie is even tolerated in Aunt Catherine's home! During one visit to Rosings, his master has a setback in the affairs of his heart. From this point, Reggie does everthing he can to make sure his master wins the heart of Reggie's pick Elizabeth, of course. And sometimes Mr D and Miss E make this very hard to accomplish. Analogies and anthropomorphisms abound, and, sure it's a mite corny, but when you're a Springer Mom and a Jane Austen fan, this is bewitching! I couldn't help myself.
I'm not a dog fan, so remember that as I tell you that I love all of Kara's books. This would have to be my least favorite, just because of the animal angle. However, she does to an excellent job of convincing you that Reggie really is a dog and that he is by Darcy's side. For those of you who can't get enough of the back story of Darcy, you will love this. It starts a fair way back into Darcy's childhood when he initially picks out Reggie. So there is a lot of talk about Darcy and his father, how they related to each other, and the horrible day when Mr. Darcy Sr. died. You also get to see Elizabeth, but not for some time. It is great to see more of Georgianna and how Wickham was with the Darcy's as a child. Reggie (Darcy's doggie) even gets to talk about Bingley's dog and how she isn't as well bred, but becomes his favorite companion (besides Mr. Darcy, that is). And yes, there is a bit of doggie love.
Though much of the P&P story is the same, it is delightful to hear Darcy talk to his dog. To tell Reggie things he would never tell another human being.
If you are a Darcy fan and love dogs, you're going to adore this book. If you aren't that hot on animals, just be prepared. I am not upset that I chanced reading it. I wouldn't have wanted to miss Reggie's tale.
I am a complete sucker for dogs, I have to confess, and this dog is a real gem. A non-dog lover might think he's too perfect, but what do they know? If you've been blessed with the love of a good dog, you know he's not (too) exaggerated.
Reggie (the dog) was not present at most of the important plot points of the original Pride and Prejudice, so he has to speculate and imagine what took place--very successfully, for the most part, since he only got Darcy's version to go on. He is credited with falling for Elizabeth first; implementing strategies to call each to the attention of the other, and, finally, bringing them together.
This was a beautiful and moving book. Which is not to say it was fast-moving--it did drag a bit. The main character lacks the power of speech, so there is very little dialogue. It's mostly reflections and descriptions. But his thoughts are very well communicated. You could feel his frustration when he wanted to speak or reply and couldn't. You could almost feel his pain as he grew older, and his desperation to see his adored master happy and leave him in good hands before he had to leave him. The end was bittersweet, so bring some kleenex along with your kindle and don't read it in a public place. But do read it.
I personally would not have read this if I didn't have three dogs at home and believed that they have much more emotional and intellectual capacity than non dog lovers may. This is the first P&P version I have read from a non human POV. I really enjoyed the intimate thoughts that Darcy shared with Reggie. I would have liked more of this, rather than more observations from Reggie. Perhaps because I talk to my dogs so frequently? It is a well written story, but it was slow going, particularly the first half. Not a lot of action or drama to make it a page turner. I would still recommend reading this for the insight into Darcy and Reggies' minds, cuteness factor and another chance to see ODC and their HEA.
