God Made Us Monsters, the debut Novel by Bill Neary, is a tale of the South Seas written in the tradition of James Michener, Jack London and James Clavel. Early in the 20th Century, Hawaii's Molokai Island was not the expected explosion of color, light and trade winds it is today, but a sepia nightmare. Where men, women and children, suspected of contracting leprosy, were cast into the shark-infested waters from the decks of condemned cattle boats and made to swim to shore only to be met and sadistically preyed upon by the members of their own kind, the Lepers of Molokai. Sent there by the Catholic Church, Father Damien is unprepared for the staggering suffering, the loss of limb, sight and mind. He is attacked from every dimension, colonial, social spiritual and forces unexplainable by natural law. All orchestrated by one individual. The "Colonel is an imperial man, dapper, brilliant and ruthless. Contracted by the British, his mission is to destabilize the growing economy and America's influence. However, he has a much darker and sinister agenda. God Made us Monsters is historical fiction, a tale of how an unspeakable hell, where monstrous violence, horror and hopeless desperation was converted into an idyllic paradise by the love and determination of a simple priest
God Made Us Monsters Bill Neary 9780692729052 Books
The author brings us to a point in American and Hawaiian history that seems scarcely possible but as it turns out, true. The banishment of a people from their homeland is very much in the news today, but who could have thought it would happen in paradise Hawaii?
The story is set against a backdrop tropical island, amidst political intrigue, ruthless capitalism, and otherworldly forces. Neary, with a remarkable sense of place transports the reader to the island of Molokai at a time and place that is both idyllic and hellish. At times I could almost smell the beautiful Hibiscus Molokai, and wretch at the conditions aboard a slave ship.
Character emotions and personalities, joyous and gross, are rendered with acute grainy accuracy.
After having read (in one sitting) I have two things to say; Tour de Force, and Mr. Neary: When can we expect a sequel?

God Made Us Monsters Bill Neary 9780692729052 Books Reviews
Neary's twist on a story we all think we know provides great depth for a seasoned novelist, never mind out of the gate! He compels the reader to live among those struggling for dignity in a brutal, hellish world. Fr Damien brings humanity and worth to a cast-off community through a humbling vision into a saintly life. Neary punctuates historical fact with the prescience to weave a moral tale into a "can't put down" book. His character depth and development draw the reader into the living hell that was Molokai, punctuated by love, loss, and faith. The antagonist is reminiscent of a modern day Biblical demon, and Neary captures his evil nature through word and deed. I highly recommend "God Made Us Monsters" and can't wait for Mr. Neary's next work!
a great story
GREAT BOOK REALLY HELD MY INTREST
Bill Neary's descriptive language makes the world of Father Damien come alive. His characters each speak with a unique voice, fitting with the historic time and place. This is a compelling read that brings to light in the present a sad and horrific chapter of our past.
Great novel and very exciting!!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Mr. William T. Neary's first book and hope there are many more. The book was engaging, entertaining, and educational. As I was getting to the end of the book I slowed down because I did not want it to end! Buy the book and ask for more!!
